Focus on the Education
The Geauga Theater has a strong emphasis on Education. Art and Theater Education classes are offered throughout the year to provide a chance for the young and old to refine their talents. Classes are currently being offered in the art and theater disciplines.

Summer Workshop 2013

Registration opens April 20, 2013 at 8:30am - 12pm at the ARTS CENTER 106 Water St., Chardon, OH (across from the police department). No online, mailed or phone registration will be accepted until April 23rd during normal business hours.

Summer Workshop Details:

  • The GLTG summer youth workshops are a combination of youth and educational theater.  Every student will be cast based on a combination of audition, preferences and experience.  The director and staff will have the final decision in casting and structure each workshop so EVERY student will have a role and speaking/singing opportunity.  The skills of theater will be taught within the framework of developing a performance and the instructors will work on elements of voice, character, confidence, design and teamwork.  
  • No classes July 4th
  • Parent meeting to answer questions: June 1, 2013 at 10:00 AM at theater
  • Family memberships available through the office or upon registration.  Family membership is $25 for one year
  • Workshops do not include a T-shirt.  Orders will be taken on a voluntary basis and the approximate cost will be $10 per T-shirt.
  • Ticket prices for performances: Complimentary for Junior; $6 all seats for Elementary and Tween; $8 all seats for Teen.  Tickets will be available online or at the box office beginning in June.  Assigned seating for all, except complimentary.
  • Limited scholarships may be available – see application below workshop listings.
  • If waitlisted, students will be admitted to the class/workshop at the discretion of the instructor.

June 10-28 (Performance June 29) FULL

American tall tales come to life in this comical adventure. Meet Paul Bunyan, Calamity Jane, Casey Jones and other famous characters as they take a train across the land!

A wonderful introduction to the performing arts.  The workshop includes art projects, singing, simple dance steps, and games.  The goals of this workshop are to expose children to the joy of being on stage and encourage confidence.


 


July 8-26 (Performance July 27) ALMOST FULL

I don’t know why she swallowed a fly! This classic verse will delight students as they try to discover why the poor old lady keeps swallowing animals to catch the fly.

Ages: 7-12

To save her father’s life, a girl leaves home to live with a frightening beast.  Unknown to her, his gruesome appearance hides a prince.  A delightful and often comedic cast adds magic to this beloved tale.

This dramatic adaptation of Beauty and the Beast will promote skills in reading, voice, character development and auditioning.  The instructors will encourage a love of the arts and focus on confidence and teambuilding skills.  Art projects that the children crate will be used in the set design.  Students are involved in many aspects of preparing a performance.

Ages: 7-12

An evil dragon, Scumme, is terrorizing Wantley Wood.  The King, in desperation, has decided to offer the hand of his daughter to any brave knight who can conquer the dragon.  An intriguing comedy of errors begins!

This musical performance will promote skills in reading, vocal techniques, music appreciation, character development and auditioning.  The instructors will encourage a love of the arts and focus on confidence and teambuilding skills.  Students are involved in many aspects of preparing a performance.  Students who love to sing and those who may be a bit shy about their vocal talents are welcome!

Ages: 10 -14

This is the beloved classic about a well-meaning but mischievous lad who bounds from one event to the next barely avoiding calamity.  Join Becky Thatcher, Aunt Polly, Injun Joe and a wonderful cast of characters in this adventure!

New this year – a workshop designed especially for tweens.  This workshop will bridge the gap between the elementary and teen productions.  Students will be encouraged to take a greater role in developing the elements of the performance under the guidance of the instructors.  Elements covered include: character, voice, delivery and auditioning.  The tweens will work together with more independence to refine their theatrical skills.  This is not a musical production. Open to all levels of experience.



 



June 3-July 18 (Performances July 18 at 7:30, 19 at 7:30 and 20 at 2)
M-Th 6-9pm: theater
Instructor: Patty Osredkar (Read Biography)

Ages 13-17

Join Shrek, an unlikely hero, and his loyal steed Donkey as they set off on a quest to rescue the beautiful (if slightly temperamental) Princess Fiona from her tower guarded by a fire breathing love-sick dragon.  Add a comedic cast to this fairy tale turned upside down and let the laughter begin.

This workshop will challenge teens to improve and expand their theatrical skills.  Choreography, voice and elements of stage production will be covered.  Guest speakers will provide a deeper insight into many “behind the scenes” contributions.  This is open to experienced and “first-time” actors.   



 

A Week With the Arts!
June 10-14
M-F  9am – 3pm: Drop off and pick up at theater all days except Friday, drop off is at arts center.

Ages:  7-12

Spend a week “learning the ropes” of acting or brushing up on your performance skills.  Tips and practice for auditions will be offered. A fun week filled with games, art projects and fun.

A great introduction or addition to other workshops.  Time will be spent covering the above listed elements.  Instruction in art will also be provided.  Students should bring a packed lunch – no nut items please.

Audition Technique CANCELLED
Ages: 13-18
Times: June 17th – July 15th Mondays 1-3 at the arts center
Instructor: Jason Leupold
Price: $50

Description: Students will learn proper technique from a professional actor.  Headshots and resumes will be discussed as well as the importance of choosing monologues and songs.  With routine practice and individualized attention, students will learn the techniques needed for an audition.


Playmaking  
Ages: 13 and older
Times: June 18th – July 16th Tuesday and Thursdays 1-2:30 at the arts center (No class July 4) 
Instructor: Wayne Howell  
Price: $80

Description: Write your own plays!  Use imagination to make stories come to life and learn how this skill can lead to a better understanding of the performing arts.  (Performance on July 16th at 2:30pm at the arts center)

Summer Stories
Ages: 3 ½ - 5
Times: June 25th – July 30th Tuesdays 10:00-12 at the arts center
Instructors:Katie Arnold (Read Biography) and Debbie Straniero    
Price: $100

Description: Preschool children will enjoy creating artwork and exploring literacy based on well-loved children’s books by Eric Carle.  Painting, forming clay letters and learning phonics will be some of the highlights of the day!


Make and Play Dulcimer
Ages: 9-14
Times: June 21st – July 26th Fridays 10-11:30 at the arts center (No class July 5) 
Instructor: Lucille Brown   
Price: $54 (material fee $46)

Description: Make a unique musical instrument and learn to play it!  The simple and sturdy dulcimer will be constructed by students and instruction will be given to learn how to make beautiful music.  A group recital at the conclusion of the class will be given to show off newly learned skills.  No prior music experience is necessary. 


Collaging
Ages: 11-17
Times: July 13th – July 27th Saturdays 1:00-2:45 at the arts center

Description: This exciting class teaches collaging through a variety of supplies on canvas.  Students will learn about color, design, shape and how to place their work.  This is a great way for students to design creative and colorful collages. 


Art Trading Cards 
Ages: 11-17
Times: July 13th – July 27th Saturdays 3:00-4:45 at the arts center
Instructor: Jessica Gaines (Read Biography)       
Price: $45

Description: Students will design miniature works of art the size of a baseball card and will use various mediums to design and create art around a theme.  Different techniques will be explored in a fun and exciting atmosphere.


Drawing with Colored Pencils
Ages: 10-Adult
Times: June 12th – July 31st Wednesdays 7-9 at the arts center
Instructor: Sandra Pulver-D’Amico (Read Biography)      
Price: $75 (A list of needed supplies will be provided)

Description: Come enjoy creating new artwork in a fun, relaxing atmosphere.  Students will learn various techniques in a variety of subject matter and will also receive individualized instruction with their chosen projects.


Watercolor Painting
Ages: Adult
Times: June 22nd and/or August 24th Saturdays 10-3 at the arts center
Instructor: Beverle Krueger a.k.a. Noah’s Child

Description: Learn thirteen steps to watercolor painting!  Skill and focus will be taught with elements of fun as students experience a new world of water and paint.  Feel free to bring your own supplies: 140 lb. Arches paper, 1 inch flat brush, ½ inch flat brush, 8/6/4 round brush, water container.
