Theater Guild's Lineup has Something for Everyone
A Werewolf, two star-crossed lovers and a curmudgeon from London .
Sounds like the setup to some wacky joke your uncle once told you, eh?
Instead, these are a just a few of the crazy, fantastical and often beloved characters that will grace the stage during the Geauga Lyric Theater Guild's 2008-09 season.
"We feel that our new season will appeal to a wide range of people from actors to audience members," said Board Trustee Karen Porter. "There are so many wonderful characters in these shows, so I don't think it'll be hard to find one to love."
The Guild's 2008-09 season will begin in October with Tim Kelley's The Curse of the Werewolf. A spooky castle, eccentric family members, a dancing penguin, a murder and, let's not forget, the werewolf... Everything is here from a touch of light romance to a classic "will-reading" scene with fiery red eyes at the window. There are plenty of chills, but this energetic and crazy spoof will keep you "howling" with laughter.
During the holiday season in December, the Guild is proud to bring back the Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol. After a several year sabbatical from the GLTG stage, the show will breathe fresh air into this reflective and joyful tale of Ebeneezer Scrooge and his search for the Christmas spirit.
For the second year in a row, the Guild hopes to work in conjunction with local schools during their February of 2009 production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The timeless journey of two star-crossed lovers trying to overcome their families' vendettas is read every year in many of our area schools. The Guild held a special performance of To Kill a Mockingbird for several high schools last season.
"We worked with Chardon Schools and Newbury Schools this past season, but we are hoping to accommodate as many schools as we can next year. Everyone was pleased with the experience so we hope to make this an annual program," Porter said.
Fiddler on the Roof will sing and dance its way on to the Geauga stage in March of 2009. The story of Tevye, a deeply devout father of a poor family, invites us into his little village of Anatevka where the traditions that have defined his life are being challenged by the winds of change. Magically weaving music, dance and laughter against a background of rejection and oppression, the production is bound to leave you with an unforgettable theatrical experience.
Lastly in May, Unger and Madison are at it again. The Odd Couple (Female Version) will provide area audiences with all the laugher they can handle in this Neil Simon classic, this time done with a twist of female décor. Instead of a poker party the hilarities of Florence Unger and Olive Madison are captured during a girl's night of Trivial Pursuit.
As always the Geauga Lyric Theater Guild is proud to bring you quality theatrical and educational programs throughout each season. The many volunteers of the Guild wants to thank all who support the Arts in Geauga County.
